Even though it was in the 80s during the day, it dipped down (just barely) into the 50s during the night. The Owls called, the frogs croaked, and the crickets chirped. What great night music!
I slept in my ENO hammock wrapped in my 20 degree Cat's Meow sleeping bag by North Face (which I love) and decided that hammocks are definitely a warm weather sleep system. I was a bit cool even in the bag and I missed that insulating layer of air from my Thermarest Mat still stored neaty in my backpack. I also learned the value of that rain fly....it could also be called a warm fly because without it, all my heat dissipates. However, the lack of a fly allowed me to see the beautiful moon-lit landscape all night!
The ENO Guardian Bug Net was nice, but probably not as critical as that night on the beach last month when the "no-see-ums" ate me up! Like many other scout leaders, I am a gear junkie! My favorite store is REI because of their exceptional customer service! I am also a big fan of Cascade Designs which makes all the MSR equipment I own. They recently replaced the fly of my 2 year old Hubba Backpacking tent when the seam tape started to dissintegrate. I shall remain their loyal customer!
The good news about the bug net is that it catches and holds things just below you. I set my water bottle down there to have handy during the night. The only bad news is that when I fell out of my hammock (Dad always said "Grace" was not my middle name), I landed on the water bottle, bruising my hip! Oh well! We learn by doing! Dr Sylvia Earle did say something to the effect of "why read about it when you could experience it!" I agree!!!
This picture is a shot of the Peace River, looking downstream, with Oak Hill campsites all along the right. There is no one here this weekend! Now we know why it's called the Peace River!
